Police were investigating an officer-involved shooting Monday afternoon on Homer Avenue in Cortland, but police said there was no threat to the public.

The incident occurred about 1 p.m. at 171 or 171 1/2 Homer Ave., said Sgt. David Kemp, zone sergeant with state police Troop C. He referred further comment to state police representatives.

"Gunfire was exchanged inside the residence," said a state police representative for Troop C. A person inside the residence was injured and taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

Homer Avenue just north of Wheeler Avenue was blocked by yellow police warning tape Monday afternoon as Cortland city police, Cortland County sheriff’s officers and state troopers were on the scene.

At lease a dozen officers, some in uniform and others in plain clothes stood outside the two-story house and gathered across the street in the parking lot of the Dollar General store. The lot of the store was also blocked by caution tape.

Cortland firefighters delivered mobile lights about 3:50 p.m. About 4:15 p.m., a number of police left, leaving behind a trio of state police and sheriff’s officers vehicles.

Police later Monday evening were canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and asking nearby businesses if they had exterior security video cameras.
