Moravia softball completes comeback against Dryden

Posted

MORAVIA –– The Moravia softball team turned an 8-1 deficit into an 11-9 comeback victory over Dryden on Monday at Moravia Central School.

In the early innings it was all Dryden. Abby Turco began the game with a single, followed by a walk from Chloe Russell and Laci Prignon reaching first after being hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Lions were only able to get one run in the inning though, as Prignon later scored due to catcher’s interference on Moravia’s Hayley Murphy.

Dryden used a big second inning to take a 6-0 lead. Prignon laced a two-run double, then Makaiya Duncan hit a two-run single and worked her way around the bases. Duncan advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third and home.

Moravia was able to shrink the lead to five in the bottom of the second due to some aggressive baserunning from Lashley Heredia-Castillo. After working a walk, Heredia-Castillo stole second and third, then scored on a ground out from Kylee Cooper. Dryden responded though and scored two runs in the top of the third on an RBI single from Prignon and a Nora Anderson steal of home.

Down 8-1, some teams would give up and look ahead, but Moravia was confident it could rally and comeback.

“The girls just work hard and keep going,” Moravia head coach Katie Sweeney said. “Once they get down, they get right back up. After we got down 8-1, I told them, ‘I’m not worried because you guys can come back. You’ve done it before and can do it again.’”

The comeback effort began in the bottom of the third, as Moravia cut the lead in half. Lily Heim began the rally on a bunt, but some defensive miscues from Dryden led to a little league home run for Heim. Brooke Proper then singled, Ella Green hit an RBI double and Heredia-Castillo hit an RBI single to make it 8-4.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cooper walked, then Emily Austin and Murphy singled to load the bases. Kendall Hess then earned an RBI on a ground out and Alexis Freier hit an RBI single to make it 8-6. Moravia made it 8-7 in the fifth, with Green hitting a single then stealing second, third and home.

Moravia’s comeback effort did not slow down in the sixth, as the Blue Devils took the lead on an RBI double from Freier, who later stole home two batters later. Heredia-Castillo then gave her team their final run of the day on an inside-the-park home run to make it 11-8.

Sweeney knew her team could make a big comeback, especially once the players got going.

“That’s the thing with this group, they just don’t quit,” Sweeney said. “It takes them a second sometimes, but once they get going, settle in and get pumped up, they just don’t stop.”

Though Moravia took the lead, it still needed three outs to complete its comeback effort.

Dryden didn’t quit despite surrendering a big lead. Russell walked to begin the seventh, followed by an RBI double from Prignon to make it 11-9. Freier, who was on the mound for Moravia, remained composed though and forced three straight ground outs to finish off the Lions.

A big reason for Moravia’s comeback was its aggressive baserunning and production throughout its entire lineup. The Blue Devils had eight different players with a hit and had eight steals as a team.

“I love our lineup because I feel like the way it’s put together, anyone can hit,” Sweeney said. “It doesn’t matter where we’re at in the lineup. “The best thing about this team is that they’re not afraid to run the bases. They’re very aggressive on the base path.”

Heredia-Castillo finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and three steals, Green went 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs and three steals, Freier went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two steals, Cooper had a hit and an RBI and Proper, Heim, Murphy and Austin had a hit.

Prignon had a big offensive day for Dryden, finishing 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Duncan added a hit and two RBIs, Brook Webster had a hit and an RBI, Russell reached base three times with a walk and scored four runs and Turco, Kennessy Drake and Anderson added a hit.

Moravia plays again at noon Saturday at Wells College against McGraw. Dryden plays at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at home against Southern Cayuga.
