Flooding reported in Cortland, Moravia

The Tioughnioga River has crested its banks at Cortland, the National Weather Service reports, and the Cortland Police Department reports flooding at the city’s water works.

The greater Cortland area has seen more than 1.5 inches of rain since Wednesday, the weather service reports, melting the snow pack from an earlier storm. That led it to issue a flood warning until 10:30 p.m. Friday for the Tioughnioga at Cortland.

The river was at 8.1 feet, just a hair over its 8-foot flood stage. In Moravia, the flood warning lasted until 3 p.m. where the Owasco Inlet was at flood stage of 8.5 feet, having fallen from 8.97 feet

The weather service advises avoiding any flooded area, including Kellogg Road in Cortland. Six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult; 12 inches is enough to carry away most cars and 2 feet will take SUVs and trucks.
