Homer officially approved its new varsity girls basketball coaches Tuesday, with Brad Sovocool being named the head coach and Jessica Parmiter taking the assistant coach spot.

Local baseball players take to the sandlot

FABIUS — Local college baseball players, from recently-graduated Cortland standouts Kooper Knabe and Caden Congdon to McGraw alum Brendan May and Cortland alum Nick Cody, got together every Tuesday and Friday to play baseball at Fabius-Pompey Elementary School. They never knew what team they were on or what jersey they were wearing until the day of the game, but they didn’t care.

Crush walk off Oilers twice to repeat as NYCBL champions

Nick Palma laced a single in the 10th inning of Game 3 of the NYCBL Championship Series Saturday to drive in Owen Podolec and secure the Cortland Crush its second consecutive NYCBL title. Palma’s hit gave the Crush a 9-8 win over the Olean Oilers at Gutchess Lumber Sports Park, Cortland’s second walk-off win of the day. The Crush won Game 2, 4-3, in 10 innings.

Crush walk off Dansville twice in same day

Vincent Mauro and Jason Arrigo both played hero for the Cortland Crush in the same day, notching walk-off singles to beat the Dansville Gliders 8-7 in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex. Crush score 7 in a row for 5th straight win

The Cortland Crush scored seven unanswered runs against the Syracuse Salt Cats over the sixth and seventh innings to secure the team’s fifth straight win in an 8-4 effort Sunday at Onondaga Community College. Cortland scored four runs in the sixth inning, then three more in the seventh to go from a 4-1 deficit to an 8-4 lead.

Crush score 4 early runs, beat Spartans

After falling to the Syracuse Spartans in their first four meetings, the Cortland Crush have won their past two meetings with them, with the most recent victory coming Friday by a score of 4-2 at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex.

Ryan Dando tabbed as next Tully AD

Ryan Dando has been a part of the Tully community for most of his life. He graduated from Tully High School in 1996. He returned to the school as a physical education teacher and has been coaching the boys basketball team for the last 19 years. Now, Dando is the new athletic director at Tully High School after Don McClure retired following the 2021-22 school year.

Cortland alum Lalonde tabbed as Red Wings new coach

The NHL’s Detroit Red Wings are now led by a Red Dragon. Former SUNY Cortland goalie Derek Lalonde was named the team’s head coach June 30, following a four-year stint as an assistant coaches with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Lalonde helped the Lightning earn four straight postseason berths, highlighted by back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021 and a trip to the finals this past season.
