The Philadelphia Eleven: Theatrical Release

Posted

The award-winning new documentary The Philadelphia Eleven will have its theatrical release at Regal Destiny USA in Syracuse and other select theaters May 14 at 7 p.m. The theatrical screening will be followed immediately by a panel discussion featuring Bishop DeDe Duncan-Probe and the Rev. Canon Megan Castellan and will focus on experiences of ordination and church inclusion for women across generations.

Women in many parts of the Christian church have struggled for full inclusion in the sacraments and leadership since the beginning of organized religion. But in 1974 a dramatic breakthrough of the so-called stained-glass ceiling took place that gave hope to Christian women everywhere. At a church in Philadelphia, a group of eleven women were ordained to the Episcopal priesthood in violation of the norms of the Episcopal Church – which at the time stated that only men were eligible for ordination. This is the story of The Philadelphia Eleven.

This special one day only screening at Regal Destiny USA is sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York. Tickets are available through the theater.
