We are just a few weeks removed from the Cortland girls basketball team and Moravia boys basketball team making trips to the state final four, but spring sports are already getting going.

Cortland, Homer, Dryden, Marathon, McGraw, Groton, Cincinnatus, Tully, Moravia and DeRuyter's teams are getting their regular seasons started this week. Cortland, Homer, Dryden, Marathon, McGraw, Tully and Moravia's baseball teams are all playing in a tournament at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex March 31 and April 1, really kicking off the final leg of the 2022-23 athletic year.

Cortland, Homer and Dryden are the area's biggest schools, and all are competing in Class B. Cortland and Homer are in Section III and Dryden is in Section IV. To prepare for the season, here's a preview of the teams at the area's big schools.

  • Cortland's baseball team will look to repeat as sectional champions, but the Purple Tigers, Homer and Dryden are all replacing a lot of seniors in their baseball programs after successful years.

  • Dryden's softball team is bringing back Kahlen Cornell, the league player of the year a season ago. Cortland and Homer's softball teams are looking to make a step forward after not losing too many players to graduation.

  • Homer's boys lacrosse team is more balanced and physically gifted than it has been in a few years, and Cortland and Dryden's boys lacrosse teams are excited to get the season underway and show their improvements.

  • Homer's girls lacrosse team is looking to start fresh after years of success with a veteran team and Cortland's girls lacrosse team has a few key players back and is looking to be a surprise contender.

  • Dryden's track & field team has a laundry list of top athletes in Section IV, while Cortland and Homer's track & field teams have their own senior athletes poised to make runs at the state meet.
