When the Homer wrestling team needed a boost, 145-pound senior Lukas Quinn delivered it with a pin with 38 seconds left in the match, leading the Trojans on a bit of a roll and a 36-33 dual-meet win over Marcellus Wednesday night at Homer High School.
According to fellow senior Sam Sorenson, Quinn's win was just what the team needed after getting down 9-3 early.
"After those two matches, we were kind of down," Sorenson said. "Then, Lukas' match sparked us all up. Jeffrey (Stauber) got us pumped after that match, he was yelling and screaming and that really just juiced our whole team."
Quinn was beating Anthony Dicapio handily before getting the pin, scoring on a big double-leg takedown 40 seconds into the match, getting an escape from bottom seven seconds into the second period and then defending a shot and taking the back. He continued his dominant offense into the third, getting a reversal and takedown before closing the match out.
"I felt in control the whole time," Quinn said. "When we were neutral in the first period, I was just working my stuff, but once I got that first takedown in the first period, I felt really in control."
The senior didn't do anything special in his dominant win, but just put what he's been working on in practices on display.
"I've just been really focused on working some things in the room and trying to translate that to the mat," Quinn said. "I think that's exactly what happened today."
Sorenson polished off the win for Homer, winning by pin in 31 seconds to make it a 27-24 Marcellus lead. The Mustangs forfeited two matches after Sorenson's win and the Trojans forfeited one to make it a 36-33 win for Homer.
"I just go into every match and do what I do," Sorenson said. "Go in, look for my shots and look for a pin."
After Quinn's win, Homer did some reshuffling and forfeited at 152 pounds, forcing everyone up a weight class. Colin Murphy picked up a big pin with 1:29 left in the second period with Homer down 27-9, then Maddox Johnson won a 5-0 decision at 215 pounds before Sorenson's win.
Matt Fish won a back-and-forth match with Hollis Child at 132 pounds, taking a 14-7 decision.
Hunter Lines (126 pounds) tapped to Colin Scherer in the first period, Jeffrey Stauber (138 pounds) lost 3-1 when Marcellus' Trevor Rankin scored with five seconds left and Dominic Burlingame (160 pounds) and Chris Slade (172 pounds) were both pinned.
Homer is now one win from clinching the OHSL Division II title, sitting at 3-0 in league and 11-2 overall.
The Trojans get a bit of a break before their next competition, a dual meet with cross-town rival Cortland at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Homer High School. Homer can then lock up the division the next day with a win at Mexico.
"It's been a little bit of a grind the last few weeks," Sorenson said. "Having a week break here will be nice. We're going on a trip Friday and Saturday to Philadelphia for a little team building. It'll be nice for a little relaxation, then two duals next week and a big tournament on the weekend. It'll be a big week and we're going to be ready for it."
