Phone scam targets Tompkins, DWI patrols up in Cortland

Posted

Tompkins County warned of a telephone scam following complaints Monday to the Seneca County Sheriff's Office.

Several callers reported receiving a robocall from Tompkins County seeking personal information to sign up for emergency notifications.

However, Tompkins County usess a mass notification system, TC SIREN, that provides alerts via voice, text or email. Residents can sign up only by going to www.tompkinscountyny.gov/siren or texting SIREN to 67283 on their mobile device.

No personal information would be requested over the phone. County officials advise people who get such calls to call their local authorities.

Expect more DWI patrols through New Year

The Cortland County Sheriff's office and Cortland Police Department announced this week, they'll take part in a high-visibility campaign through the holiday season to reduce impaired driving.

The campaign, which began Saturday and continues through Jan. 1, is promoted by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

Similar campaigns focus on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Super Bowl weekend and St. Patrick’s Day.
