Dryden library given $10,500
DRYDEN — Southworth Library in Dryden has received more than $10,000 from the Bernard Carl and Shirley Rosen Library Fund for its family and children’s programs and for its summer kids club, the library has announced.

The grants — $6,600 for the family programs and $3,9210 for the camps — were distributed throught he Community Foundation of Tompkins County.

The kids clubs will meet once a week for each age group (grades K-2 and 3-8) from July 5 to Aug. 19 with activities related to the summer reading theme: Oceans of Possibilities.

The monthly family programs meet at 11 a.m. Saturdays with a variety of themes, guests, crafts and activities.

The Library Grant Cycle of the Community Foundation of Tompkins County awarded a record $225,400 to 24 libraries in the Finger Lakes Library System service area, seeking to promote curiosity and a love reading and learning.

Lab presents stories of longhouse
ITHACA — The Cornell Lab of Ornithology will present Stories from the People of the Longhouse at 10 a.m. May 14 at the lab on Sapsucker Woods Road in Ithaca.

Perry Ground, a storyteller and educator for more than 25 years, will tell the stories, using descriptions, his rhythmic voice and audience interaction.

He will recounts traditional Haudenosaunee legends that have been told for hundreds of years and showcases the birds, beliefs, customs, and history of the Haudenosaunee people.

The event will take place outdoors under the portico, near the main entrance to the visitor center. Free parking is available. The center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Trails are open dawn until dusk.
