The Homer boys wrestling team went 5-0 Saturday to win the Denny Wright Memorial Duals at Homer High School. The proceeds from the tournament will go to Homer junior James Griffin, who was recently diagnosed with stage three brain cancer.
Homer beat Sherburne-Earlville 60-18, Sidney 48-24, Jordan-Elbridge 51-21, A-P-W/Pulaski 53-24 and Bainbridge-Guilford 36-30.
Jeffrey Stauber (132 pounds) and Sam Sorenson (215 pounds) led Homer with undefeated runs. Stauber went 5-0 with four pins, including one in 27 seconds, and a tech fall and Sorenson was 4-0 with three pins coming in under a minute and the other exactly one minute in.
Lukas Quinn (145 pounds), Dominic Burlingame (152 pounds), Anthony Cicioni (126 pounds) and Daniel Hardesty (145 pounds) all went unbeaten as well. Quinn was 3-0 with three pins, Burlingame was 2-0 with two pins and Cicioni and Hardesty both went 1-0 with a pin.
Maddox Johnson (189 pounds), Colin Murphy (172 pounds), Chris Slade (160 pounds) and Liam O'Brien (102 pounds) all lost once. Johnson, Murphy and Slade were 2-1, with Murphy and Slade winning by pin twice and Johnson getting a pin and decision. Liam O'Brien was 1-1 with a pin.
Sean Brown (285 pounds) was 2-2 with two wins by pin, Hunter Lines (126 pounds) was 3-2 with three pins, including one in 29 seconds and Matthew Fish (138 pounds) and Aaron O'Brien (110 pounds) were both 0-2 to round out the Trojans' performance.
WRESTLING
CORTLAND
Cortland went 1-2 at the Phoenix Quad Meet Saturday, beating Oswego 42-18 and losing 44-22 to Whitesboro and 54-15 to Phoenix.
Avery Canzano (145 pounds) went 3-0 with a decision, a pin and a major decision, Wyatt Tinker (152 pounds) was 2-0 with two pins and Anthoni Nemecek (189 pounds) finished 2-1 with a pin and decision win.
Karter Bush (138 pounds) went 1-2 with a decision and Nickolas Hines (132 pounds) and Asher Tinker (172 pounds) both were 1-2 with a pin. Garrett Major (118 pounds) was 1-1 with a pin, Gage Burlingame (126 pounds) went 0-3 and Jackson Marks (110 pounds) was 0-1.
MARATHON
Brittan Keller (152 pounds) and Melodie Sutton (120 pounds) each took first place in their weight classes Saturday at the IAC Championships. Keller went 4-0 with two pins and two decisions and Sutton was 2-0 with two pins.
Zander Sutton (132 pounds), Logan Jamison (285 pounds) and Maddox Hoy (126 pounds) all finished second, with Sutton going 3-1 with three pins, Jamison finishing 2-1 with two pins and Hoy going 1-1 with a decision win. Braydon Homer (138 pounds) also came in third, winning with a 55-second pin, a major decision and a decision.
Brandan Gumaer (126 pounds), Gabe Spizzirri (132 pounds) and Julian Spizzirri (172 pounds) all went 2-2, with Gumaer and Gabe Spizzirri getting a pin and decision and Julian Spizzirri securing two pins. Anthony Neville (152 pounds) and Dawsyn Cole (189 pounds) both went 1-2, with Neville winning by decision and Cole getting a pin. Simon Donah (102 pounds), Jonathan Root (126 pounds), Dominick Homer (145 pounds) and Preston Thorington (285 pounds) all went 0-2.
GROTON
Aidan Shufelt (110 pounds) and Isaac Allen (172 pounds) both went perfect through their weight classes Saturday at the IAC Championships. Shufelt won with a 3-0 performance than included a 26-second pin, a tech fall and a decision. Allen had two first-period pins.
Donovan Mitchell (215 pounds) suffered his first loss of the year in the championship match, a 10-9 decision. He won with two pins before that. Josh Batzer (102 pounds) went 0-2.
DRYDEN
Hunter Covington (189 pounds) was Dryden's only wrestler to place in the top three Saturday at the IAC Championships, going 3-1 with two pins and a decision win.
Kaydin Hinckley (285 pounds) went 2-2 with a 31-second pin and a 13-second pin, Oscar Brotherton (118 pounds) went 3-2 with three pins and Wyatt Curtis (110 pounds) was 1-2 with a 45-second pin. Christopher Greene (126 pounds), Paul Best (132 pounds), Dean Belden (138 pounds), Zachary Brooker (138 pounds), Nicholas Bieber (145 pounds), Aaron Thompson (215 pounds) and Sam LaMorte (120 pounds) all went 0-2 for Dryden and Kassandra Lindsay (114 pounds) was 0-3.
MORAVIA
Hunter Boynton (118 pounds) and Seth Parker (215 pounds) both claimed third for Moravia Saturday at the IAC Championships. Boynton was 3-1 with three pins, with one coming in 17 seconds, and Parker also went 3-1 with three pins and a 35-second one.
Cole Cuddeback (138 pounds) finished 3-2 with two pins and a major decision, Gavin Wells (285 pounds) was 2-2 with two pins, with a 39-second one, Nicholas Plue (145 pounds) went 2-3 with a pin and an injury victory and Logan Wells (160 pounds) was 1-3 with a 43-second pin. Jakob Volles (110 pounds), Iziah Walters (118 pounds), Devin McCall (152 pounds) and Kyle Beardsley (285 pounds) all went 0-2.
INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
CORTLAND
Lilly Call and Campbell Bush each set a school record Saturday at Utica University, with Call again breaking her own mark in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:39.77 and Bush setting the mark in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.82 seconds. Bush also qualified herself for sectionals.
Morgann Doane and Spenser Dodds also qualified themselves for sectionals. Doane had a 30-foot, 9-inch hop, skip and jump in the triple jump and Dodds finished the 1,000-meter run in 2:56.10.
HOMER
Logan Darling had the best finish of any Homer athlete Saturday at Onondaga Community College, coming in second in the weight throw with a 54-foot, 0.5-inch toss. Darling also qualified for sectionals in the shot put with a 37-foot, 1-inch throw.
Ingrid Aagard qualified herself for sectionals in both the 300-meter dash and the 550-meter dash, finishing in 45.83 second and 7.91 seconds, respectively. Aagard's 300-meter time broke the Homer freshman class record that's stood for 35 years.
BOYS BASKETBALL
MARATHON 54, SPENCER-VAN ETTEN 39
Conor Holland scored 20 points, grabbed eight rebunds and dished out seven assists to lead Marathon Friday, and the Olympians jumped out to a 28-9 lead through a quarter and led 38-15 at halftime. Holland also became Marathon's all-time leading scorer in the first quarter.
Braydin Drake contributed 14 points, Bryce Hartman added 10 points, Jacob Byron and Drew Rozewski both had four points and Zach Birdsall notched two points.
DRYDEN 67, ELMIRA HEIGHTS 28
Xavier Scott's 14-point, 10-rebound double-double led Dryden Friday as the Lions got out to a 19-2 lead after a quarter and never looked back. Xavier Scott also had two steals and a block.
Colton Dow led Dryden in scoring with 16 points to go with four rebounds and two steals, Daniel Murphy had 15 points, five boards, three assists and two steals and Peter Nydam contributed six points, five rebounds, 10 assists and three steals. Alexander Scott (six points, nine rebounds, one assist, one block), Brody Casterline (five points, one rebound, three assists), Bruce Debo (two points, one rebound), Tyler Nixon (two points, one rebound, two steals, one block) and Ceon Miles (one point, seven rebounds) all contributed for the Lions as well.
MORAVIA 69, ODESSA-MONTOUR 37
Kyler Proper had 19 points, two assists and four steals and Joe Baylor notched 14 points, four rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks Friday in Moravia's big win.
Abram Wasileski returned to the lineup with 10 points, a rebound, an assist and a steal, Logan Bell pitched in 10 points, one rebound and three assists, Kaiden Sharpsteen contributed five points, three rebounds and a block and Connor Fox had three points, three rebounds and a steal. Nate Shaw (two points, two rebounds), Aiden Kelly (two points, three rebounds, three assists, one steal, one block), Travis Johnson (two points, two rebounds, Luke Landis (two points, one rebound), Kyler Adams (three rebounds, four assists, one steal), Will Hess (three rebounds, one steal) and Jackson Hares-Ryan (one assist) also aided the Blue Devils' win.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
CORTLAND 68, OSWEGO 64
Cortland survived its second game with Oswego in as many days Saturday behind Kendall Mack's 22 points on four made threes. Cortland won the second quarter 19-11 to pull ahead 36-30 at the half.
Valerosa Gambitta also contributed 19 points, Claire Turner netted 13 points and Mallory Turner and Ryleigh Larkin each had seven points.
CINCINNATUS 40, UTICA ACADEMY OF SCIENCE 33
Cincinnatus avenged its earlier loss to the Utica Academy of Science Saturday thanks to Cortney Scutt's 19 points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals.
Justice Crane added eight points and nine rebounds, Lucy Finch contributed two points, 15 boards and two steals and Sidney Glover had five points and nine rebounds. Mandi Waltz (four points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals) and JuShawna Crane (two points, seven rebounds, one assist, one steal) also contributed for the Lions.
