Homer girls lax snaps skid with close win

Eila Spanbauer and Maria Partis combined for 11 goals Saturday as the Homer girls lacrosse team edged out East Syracuse-Minoa at Homer High School. Both the girls and boys teams wore lavender jerseys Saturday to support Golisano Children’s Hospital.

The game was tied at six at halftime, but the Trojans outscored the Spartans 8-6 after halftime.

Emma Effinger also added two goals and an assist, Izzy Small scored a goal and Lilly Sorenson contributed an assist.

Aislynn Cobb made nine saves and picked up a ground ball for Homer.

Sorenson controlled eight draws for the Trojans, Effinger racked up seven draw controls, Spanbauer added a draw control and a ground ball, Izzy Tutino controlled a draw and forced a turnover, Partis snagged three ground balls, Taryn Quinn nabbed two ground balls, Gracie Newman and Caitlin McCloy each got a ground ball and forced a turnover and Small, Caleigh Stone and Kiera Hooper all picked up a ground ball.

Homer, now 8-4, plays again at 6 p.m. today at Marcellus.

GIRLS LACROSSE

SKANEATELES 16, SOUTHERN HILLS 2

Mackenzie Loughlin and Maddie Simmons scored both of Southern Hills’ goals Saturday in a lopsided loss. Louglin and Gabby Flatt each added assist for the Storm, now 5-6.

Kiera Reed stopped 10 shots in goal for Southern Hills and got two ground balls. Flatt controlled two draws and got a ground ball, Simmons and Aliyah Mattox each had a draw control and a ground ball, Ellie McElhannon forced two turnovers, Charlotte Hourigan forced a turnover and got a ground ball, Gracie Burns scooped up three ground balls and Loughlin, Kameryn Meaney and Amie Shute all got one ground ball.

BOYS LACROSSE

AUBURN 12, HOMER 9

Homer lost the fourth quarter 4-1 Saturday as the Trojans have now lost three of their last five games. Homer had nine different players score a goal.

Daniel Stiles contributed a goal and two assists, Jack Brady and Cooper Swartz each notched a goal and an assist, Mason Potter, Gabe O’Connor, Alex Votra, Wyatt Wilbur, Anthony Guido and Chris Slade all scored once and Brycen Poole and Ben Bradshaw each tallied an assist.

Bradshaw made 12 saves for the Trojans. Liam O’Connor got a team-high six ground balls, Logan Stauber collected four ground balls, Votra and Wilbur each scooped up three, Poole, Brady, Swartz and Mason McCall all got two and Potter, Gabe O’Connor and Kaden Durham got one apiece.

SOFTBALL

McGRAW 10, GENERAL BROWN 9

Camdyn Caperton drove in Josslyn Eaton on a walkoff fielder’s choice in the bottom of the eighth inning to help McGraw continue its hot streak. Eaton led off the inning with a single, then Bristol Eastman and Hannah Wilson each hit a single to load the bases.

The Eagles got 20 hits Saturday, led by Eastman and Remmi Stull. Eastman was 4-for-5 with a run scored and Stull finished 4-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, an RBI and three runs. Wilson was 3-for-5 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored, Eaton was 3-for-5 with three runs, Katelynn Millard went 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs, Madison Sweeney was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Leah Terwilliger doubled, walked, drove in a run and scored once and Haylee Bassett singled.

Stull tossed 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Abby Lakie went the final 2.1 frames, allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks with three punchouts.

WEEDSPORT 7, TULLY 6

PORT BYRON 4, TULLY 0

Tully allowed four runs in the bottom of the seventh in the first game of its road doubleheader Saturday despite three-hit games from Ella Polak, Julia Wortley and Hayley Brenchley. Polak was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run, Wortley was 3-for-4 and scored twice and Brenchley finished 3-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Anna Pierce singled, knocked in two runs and scored once, Maria Altman tripled, drove in a run and scored and Ella Tordel singled.

Brenchley threw the whole game, allowing seven runs on six hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts.

Tully was two-hit at Port Byron, with Susan Kuty and Grace McKenna getting the only two hits off Port Byron pitcher Jenna Jump. Jump struck out 11 Black Knights.

Brenchley also went all six innings in the nightcap, giving up four runs on five hits and five walks with five strikeouts.

BASEBALL

McGRAW 8, GENERAL BROWN 4

Sophomore Blair Mulcahy punched out the 100th batter of his career in the first inning Saturday as McGraw scored in each of the first five innings to bounce back from its second loss of the season. Blair Mulcahy allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits, three walks and a hit batter with five strikeouts in five innings. The star sophomore also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, two triples, four RBIs and two runs scored.

Calob Sutton also doubled and scored three times for the Eagles, Brennan Wilson was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Foster Eaton and Owen Mulcahy each had a hit and a run, Riley VanLiew hit a single, Thomas Lea drove in two runs and Jaydon Bassett knocked in a run.

Bassett finished up the final two innings behind Blair Mulcahy, scattering a hit and a walk while striking out two.

TULLY 15, WEEDSPORT 3

TULLY 4, PORT BYRON 3

Caden Graves had a massive first game, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, three RBIs and a run scored as Tully scored in each of the first six innings in a sweep of its road doubleheader. Andy Polak also finished 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run, a walk, four RBIs and three runs scored.

Will Lund was 2-for-2 with a walk, two hit by pitches, two RBIs and three runs, Wyatt Lund went 2-for-2 with two walks and four runs, Zeke Mohat singled, walked twice, drove in two runs and scored twice, Nate Melton singled and knocked in three runs, Ben Fleckenstein singled, walked twice and scored once, Connor Bastedo doubled and scored and Dan Duffy singled.

Mohat set down the side in order in the first with three strikeouts, then Polak struck out five on one hit in two innings. Jesse Morgan walked four and hit a batter with five strikeouts in two frames, Oscar Breitzka allowed a run on a walk in two batters with a strikeout in an inning and Melton finished the final inning, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk.

Mohat, Polak and Breitzka teamed up to hold down Port Byron’s offense to win the nightcap. Mohat tossed two innings, striking out two and walking a batter. Polak followed him up with 3.2 frames, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Breitzka went the last 1.1 innings, giving up an unearned run on a hit and three walks with three strikeouts.

Mohat finished 2-for-4 at the plate, Breitzka singled, walked and scored a run, Fleckenstein walked twice and scored a run, Will Lund scored a run, Bastedo singled and walked and Polak singled.

DeRUYTER 6, LAFARGEVILLE 2

Dylan Foster struck out 10 batters over seven innings Saturday to lead DeRuyter to its second win of the season. Foster gave up two runs on two hits and a walk on the mound and hit a double, drove in two runs and scored a run at the dish.

Devens Whalen went 2-for-2 with a triple, a walk and two runs scored, Jeramy Prince finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Wes Pforter was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, Riley Worlock doubled and walked and Nick Whitt singled and scored twice.

TRACK & FIELD

CORTLAND

Iniko Abani led Cortland Friday at the Ed Wadas Whitesboro Invitational, placing second in the 110-meter hurdles and third in the high jump. Both of his marks qualified him for the State Qualifier.

Bryan Honan then won the discus at the St. Anthony’s Invitational Saturday with a 148-foot, 2-inch throw. That puts him 2 feet, 8 inches shy of the school record.

DRYDEN

Reagan Burnham topped Dryden’s effort Friday at the Legends of the Night Invitational, finishing first in the girls 1,500-meter race (5:17.29) and 3,000-meter race (12:05.95).

Jade Brockner also won the girls 200-meter dash (26.64 seconds) and was third in the 100-meter dash, Maysie Davis finished second in the triple jump, fifth in the long jump and sixth in the high jump, Mckenna Crocker was second in the 3,000-meter race and sixth in the 1,500-meter race, Raelen Green finished fourth in the long jump and sixth in the 100-meter dash, Dalia Bosworth was fifth in the pole vault and Weronika Conroy came in fifth in the shot put. Green, Nicole Morrow, Hannah Emmelhainz and Brockner placed second in the 4x100-meter relay, the 4x800-meter relay team of Crocker, Morrow, Alivia Wojcik and Burnham came in third and the 4x400-meter relay team of Morrow, Bosworth, Emmelhainz and Brockner finished fourth.

Ethan Gibbs paced the Dryden boys, winning the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.42) and coming in second in the 110-meter hurdles. Linkin Hess also placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles and Paul Busby was sixth in the 1,600-meter race. The 4x800-meter relay team of Hess, Eliot Couch, Sawyer Dickinson and Busby placed third and the 4x400-meter relay team of Gibbs, Busby, Couch and Hess came in fifth.

MORAVIA

Westin Walker won the boys 400-meter race (51.97 seconds) Friday at the Legends of the Night Invitational to lead the Moravia boys. Seth Parker also finished second in both the shot put and discus and Kyler Proper placed second in the 100-meter dash.

Karson Mackey took second in the girls 100-meter hurdles, Jordan Smith came in second in the high jump and Cece Stryker was second in the 400-meter dash.

BOYS GOLF

DeRUYTER 196, MADISON 268

Payne Wood paced DeRuyter Friday with a 36, Owen Davis shot a 38, Brayden Metcalf added a 39, Cody Nellenback carded a 41 and Justin Booth shot a 42 in a big win.
