Early voting to open Saturday

Early voting for the general election in Cortland County begins 9 a.m. Saturday at the Cortland County Board of Elections Office, 112 River St., Cortland.

Voting continues until 5 p.m. Saturday and resumes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Nov. 3 to 5. Early voting will be noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Nov. 2.

Polls will be open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. across the county on election day, Nov. 7. To find your polling place, go to https://voterlookup.elections.ny.gov/.

Unemployment up in Cortland as labor force grows

The unemployment rate in Cortland County rose in September to 3.2% from 3% in September 2022, even as 700 more county residents were employed compared to a year ago.

The state Department of Labor reported Tuesday that 22,900 Cortland County residents had jobs in September, up from 22,200 a year ago. Eight hundred more were looking for work, up from 700 in September 2022, leading to the 3.2% unemployment rate, indicating that the labor force has grown to 23,700 people from 22,900 over the past year.

Statewide, the unemployment rate rose to 4% from 3.6%, year over year as the labor force grew to 9.74 million from 9.61 million.

Regionally, unemployment in metropolitan Syracuse rose to 3.2% from 3%; metropolitan Binghamton unemployment rose to 3.3% from 3.1%; and metropolitan Ithaca’s unemployment rose to 2.8% from 2.6%. Cayuga County unemployment rose to 3% from 2.9% and Chenango County unemployment rose to 2.9% from 2.7%.
