Due to a recent change in law, voters are no longer permitted to cast a ballot on a voting machine if they have already been issued an absentee ballot for that election, although voters who have been issued an absentee ballot can use an affidavit ballot. The affidavit ballot will be kept separate until the election is completed and election officials have verified whether the absentee ballot has been received. If the voter’s absentee ballot has been received, the affidavit ballot will not be counted.

Turn the ballot over
After you pick your candidates turn the ballot over. The state has a referendum on a $4.2 billion environmental bond act, Cortland County has a referendum on abolishing the county treasurer's position.

The city of Cortland, town of Marathon and Cayuga County have referendums, too.

Statewide — The referendum asks whether the state should borrow up to $4.2 billion to fund environmental protection, natural restoration, resiliency and clean energy projects.

Cortland County — The referendum, if approved, would eliminate the elected position of county treasurer and fold those tasks into the county's finance director position.

Cortland — City voters have two referendums to decide: One would extend the office of council members to four years instead of two starting with the 2023 election.

The other would extend the mayor's term to four years instead of two, also starting with the 2023 election.

Marathon — Marathon voters have five additional questions on the ballot.

Four would extend the terms of office to four years from two for town supervisor, highway superintendent, town clerk and tax collector.

The fifth would allow the town to opt out of allowing cannabis retail dispensaries and consumption sites in the town.

Cayuga County — Cayuga County voters have a referendum on reducing the size of the Cayuga County Legislature to 11 legislators from 15.
