Cortland County Health Department recommends that all Cortland County residents age 6 months and older receive the updated COVID-19 vaccine to protect themselves against COVID-19, including hospitalization and death, the department announced Monday.

Flu vaccines for the 2023-2024 flu season are also available and recommended for all individuals age 6 months and older to protect against serious outcomes from seasonal flu this fall and winter.

The updated COVID-19 vaccines were approved by the Food and Drug Administration on Sept. 11 and recommended by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Sept. 12.

Details, from the health department:

• Vaccines not only protect against hospitalization and death, but also reduce the chances of suffering the effects of long COVID.

• You can get the updated COVID-19 vaccine and seasonal flu vaccine at the same time.

•The updated COVID-19 vaccines are expected to provide good protection against COVID-19 for the latest variants.

Vaccine appointments can be made through healthcare providers, pharmacies, or at https://www.vaccines.gov/.

“With an increase in COVID-19 in the community I believe it is very important to protect yourself against this potentially deadly illness,” said Dr. Matthew Noble, a family practitioner and member of the Cortland County Board of Health. “I strongly recommend the updated COVID-19 vaccine in an effort to prevent contracting and transmitting the virus, especially for people that are older or have chronic illnesses such as diabetes, COPD, asthma and heart disease.”
