A Cortland woman has been indicted on a charge of criminally negligent homicide, accused of failing to administer medication to an 8-year-old child, leading to the child's death, Cortland police reported.

Billiejo L. Adams, 32, of 138 Port Watson St., was arrested Thursday and arraigned Friday in Cortland County Court, charged with a count of criminally negligent homicide, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. She was indicted by a Cortland County grand jury, which received the case May 20.

The child died Oct. 20 at 138 Port Watson St. Investigators said Adams, the child's custodian, failed to administer medication or provide proper care for the child. Living conditions in the home were substandard, police added, and that contributed to the child's death.

The investigation included Cortland police, the Cortland County Department of Social Services, the Cortland County District Attorney's Office and Cortland County Coroner's Office.

Adams was sent to the Cortland County Jail on $3,000 bail or $6,000 bond pending an appearance July 21 in Cortland County Court.
