Cortland, Tompkins remain at low COVID-19 risk

Cortland and Tompkins counties remained at low risk of coronavirus spread, the federal government reported late last week.

Chenango and Madison counties also remained at low risk, and the remaining counties surrounding Cortland remained at medium risk.

Cortland County had 39 new cases of COVID-19 between March 2 and Wednesday, giving it a rate of 81.97 cases per 100,000 people, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

Under metrics and guidance from the CDC — which take into account the number of new cases in a week, the number of hospitalizations and hospital capacity:

  • In counties with a “high risk,” wearing a mask in indoor public places is still recommended.

  • In counties with a “medium risk,” people with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask. People at a high risk for severe illness should consult their healthcare provider about the need for a mask or other precautions.

  • In counties with a “low risk,” no additional precautions beyond staying up to date with vaccines and getting tested if one has symptoms are recommended.

Cortland reports 5 new COVID cases

Cortland County reported five new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, raising the number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began to 13,621, the state Health Department reports.

Tompkins and Cayuga counties reported 18 new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state reported. The three counties have seen 61,269 cases since the pandemic began in March 2020. The number of people who have died from the virus remains 419.

  • One new COVID patient was admitted Friday to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center, the state reported. The hospital had eight COVID patients. The state reports 318,504 tests have been administered. The state has reported 135 deaths.

  • Tompkins County saw 11 new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state Health Department reported. The number of confirmed cases rose to 26,946. The state reports 3,078,129 tests have been administered. The county reports 102 residents have died.

  • Cayuga County saw seven new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state Health Department reported. Confirmed cases rose to 20,702. The state reports 415,607 tests have been administered, and 182 people have died.

Cortland -- 28,426 have received both shots, or 59.4% of the population; 16.8% are up to date.

Tompkins -- 82,153 have received both shots, or 79.9% of the population; 26.7% are up to date.

Cayuga -- 47,035 have received both shots, or 61.0% of the population; 15.0% are up to date.

Statewide -- 15.37 million have received both shots, or 76.5% of the population; 14.1% are up to date.
