Cortland, Tompkins elevated to medium risk

Cortland and Tompkins counties were elevated to a medium risk of coronavirus spread, the federal government reported, as the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 spreads across the nation.

The only county near Cortland that remains low risk is Chenango.

Cortland County had 28 new cases of COVID-19 between Jan. 13 and Wednesday, giving it a rate of 58.85 cases per 100,000 people, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

Under metrics and guidance from the CDC — which take into account the number of new cases in a week, the number of hospitalizations and hospital capacity:

• In counties with a “high risk,” wearing a mask in indoor public places is still recommended.
  
  
•  In counties with a “medium risk,” people with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask. People at a high risk for severe illness should consult their healthcare provider about the need for a mask or other precautions.
  
  
• In counties with a “low risk,” no additional precautions beyond staying up to date with vaccines and getting tested if one has symptoms are recommended.

Cortland reports 10 new COVID cases

Cortland County reported 10 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, raising the number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began to 13,156, the state Health Department reports.

Tompkins and Cayuga counties reported 58 new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state reported. The three counties have seen 59,569 cases since the pandemic began in March 2020. The number of people who have died from the virus remains 411.

• One new COVID patients was admitted to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center on Friday, the state Health Department reported Sunday. The hospital had three COVID patients. The state Health Department reports 313,155 tests have been administered. The state has reported 134 deaths.
  
  
• Tompkins County saw 23 new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state Health Department reported. The number of confirmed cases rose to 26,227. The state reports 3,069,789 tests have been administered. One hundred Tompkins residents have died.
  
  
• Cayuga County saw 35 new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state Health Department reported. Confirmed cases rose to 20,186. The state reports 405,923 tests have been administered, and 177 people have died.

Tompkins -- 82,056 have received both shots, or 79.8% of the population; 25.4% are up to date.

Cayuga -- 46,971 have received both shots, or 60.9% of the population; 14.2% are up to date.

Statewide -- 15.34 million have received both shots, or 76.4% of the population; 13.2% are up to date.
