The Cortland baseball team had its five-game winning streak snapped as the Purple Tigers came out on the wrong end of a pitcher’s duel against Westhill and fell 2-0 Tuesday at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex.
Zach Muir had a solid outing for Cortland. The sophomore tossed 93 pitches in six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and eight strikeouts. Westhill’s first run came in the top of the second inning after Kellen Pens reached on an error and scored on an RBI triple from Trey Dillabough two batters later. The Warriors’ second run came in the top of the fifth after Taden Chester began the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI double from Dom Zawadzki.
Though Muir delivered a quality start for Cortland, the Purple Tigers’ offense had trouble getting things going against Westhill ace Mike Madigan, who will be playing at Division I George Mason next year. Madigan threw 5.2 scoreless innings, struck out 12 and walked four. Caden Albright delivered the first hit of the game for Cortland in the fifth on Madigan’s final pitch.
Cortland had chances against Madigan as Cal Albright, Ethan Johnson, Connor Browngardt and Jaheim Robinson got on base via the walk, but Madigan was able to work out of any trouble.
Purple Tigers head coach Ben Albright knew what type of game it was going to be going in with two strong pitchers going at it, his squad just came up short.
“I said before the season that I thought he’d be the best pitcher we’d see, and he proved that (Tuesday),” Ben Albright said. “He threw strikes, pitched to the zone and did his thing. We knew what we were going to see and that this would be a low-scoring game. I don’t want to take anything away from Zach (Muir) either because I thought he did a great job.”
Westhill went to Luke Pickett to record the final four outs after Caden Albright’s single. With two outs in the fifth, Ethan Johnson flied out to right field to end the inning. In the sixth, Owen Johnson also flied out to right followed by Antonio Terrazas reaching on a walk. Browngardt then struck out and Robinson grounded out to end the game.
It was the first loss of the season for Cortland, which moved to 5-1. The Purple Tigers know how difficult it is to stay on a winning streak and approached this week’s set of games with the possibility they could drop one. They just want to keep playing the best baseball they can moving forward.
“We know how difficult it is to go 20-0,” Ben Albright said. “We looked at this week and kind of set a goal of trying to go 3-1 or better. It doesn’t mean we want to lose, but it means we’re being realistic about the fact that we’re going to face a really high-quality team in Westhill. They’re almost a mirror image of us with great pitching and quality defense. We just learn from it. We like these close games.”
Cortland has another crack at Westhill at 7 p.m. Friday at Onondaga Community College.
