21 cases reported in Cortland

Cortland County reported 21 cases of COVID-19 oover the weekend, raising the number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began to 12,075, the state Health Department reports.

Tompkins and Cayuga counties reported 69 new cases over the weekend, the state reported Sunday. The three counties have seen 54,417 cases since the pandemic began in March 2020. The number of people who have died from the virus remains 382.

• Two COVID patients were admitted to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center on Thursday, the state Health Department reported Friday. The hospital had six COVID patients. Since the pandemic began, 721 Cortland County residents have been hospitalized for COVID; that figure was last updated Aug. 18. The state Health Department reports 296,760 tests have been administered. The state has reported 128 deaths.
• Tompkins County saw 48 new cases over the weekend, the state Health Department reported Sunday. The number of confirmed cases rose to 23,915. The state reports 3,042,461 tests have been administered. Ninety-one Tompkins residents have died.
• Cayuga County saw 21 new cases over the weekend, the state Health Department reported Sunday. Confirmed cases rose to 18,427. The state reports 379,235 tests have been administered, and 163 people have died.

167,574 receive COVID vaccine
The state Health Department reports 29,741 Cortland County residents have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, or 62.2% of the county’s total population. A total of 58.7% of the county has been fully vaccinated, and 61.2% of the eligible population has received a booster.

• In Tompkins County, 87,980 people have received at least one dose, or 85.6% of the population; 77.6% are fully vaccinated. and 63.2% of the eligible population has been boosted.
• In Cayuga County, 49,853 residents have received at least one dose, or 64.6% of the population; 60.4% are fully vaccinated and 60.4% of the eligible population has been boosted.
• Across the state, 16.85 million people have received at least one dose, or 83.2% of the population. A total of 75.2% have received two doses, and 53.6% of the eligible population has been boosted.

Cortland rate 105 per 100,000
Cortland County had 50 new cases of COVID-19 between Aug. 19 and Thursday, giving it a rate of 105.08 cases per 100,000 people, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

It had a “low” risk, under CDC guidelines. Under metrics and guidance from the CDC — which take into account the number of new cases in a week, the number of hospitalizations and hospital capacity:

• In counties with a “high risk,” wearing a mask in indoor public places is still recommended.
• In counties with a “medium risk,” people with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask. People at a high risk for severe illness should consult their healthcare provider about the need for a mask or other precautions.
• In counties with a “low risk,” no additional precautions beyond staying up to date with vaccines and getting tested if one has symptoms are recommended.
