168,256 receive COVID vaccine

The state Health Department reports 29,821 Cortland County residents have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, or 62.4% of the county’s total population.

A total of 58.8% of the county has been fully vaccinated, and 61.1% of the eligible population has received a booster.

  • In Tompkins County, 88,452 people have received at least one dose, or 86.0% of the population; 78.0% are fully vaccinated. and 63.3% of the eligible population has been boosted.
  • In Cayuga County, 49,983 residents have received at least one dose, or 64.8% of the population; 60.6% are fully vaccinated and 60.2% of the eligible population has been boosted.
  • Across the state, 16.94 million people have received at least one dose, or 83.6% of the population. A total of 75.6% have received two doses, and 53.4% of the eligible population has been boosted.

15 COVID cases reported in Cortland
Cortland County reported 15 cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, raising the number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began to 12,717, the state Health Department reports.

Tompkins and Cayuga counties reported 41 new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state reported.

The three counties have seen 57,382 cases since the pandemic began in March 2020. The number of people who have died from the virus remains 392.

Three new COVID patients were admitted to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center on Thursday, the state Health Department reported Friday. The hospital had five COVID patients. Since the pandemic began, 793 Cortland County residents have been hospitalized for COVID; that number was last updated Oct. 25. The state Health Department reports 304,040 tests have been administered. The state has reported 129 deaths.

  • Tompkins County saw 26 new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state Health Department reported. The number of confirmed cases rose to 25,213. The state reports 3,055,737 tests have been administered. Ninety-six Tompkins residents have died.
  • Cayuga County saw 15 new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state Health Department reported. Confirmed cases rose to 19,452. The state reports 391,114 tests have been administered, and 167 people have died.

Cortland at 55 cases per 100,000
Cortland County had 26 new cases of COVID-19 between Oct. 19 and Wednesday, giving it a rate of 54.64 cases per 100,000 people, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

It had a “low” risk, under CDC guidelines. Under metrics and guidance from the CDC — which take into account the number of new cases in a week, the number of hospitalizations and hospital capacity:

  • In counties with a “high risk,” wearing a mask in indoor public places is still recommended.
  • In counties with a “medium risk,” people with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask. People at a high risk for severe illness should consult their healthcare provider about the need for a mask or other precautions.
  • In counties with a “low risk,” no additional precautions beyond staying up to date with vaccines and getting tested if one has symptoms are recommended.
