Roads were reopened after they were closed for 14 hours when a propane truck crashed and began leaking Friday morning on West River Road in Virgil.
Two homes have been evacuated and West River Road, Stafford Road, and Snyder Hill Road in Virgil were expected to remain closed into the early morning hours Saturday following a propane truck crash about 9:30 a.m. Friday, Virgil Fire Chief Adam Brown said via social media.
West River Road has been closed off in a perimeter approximately 2 miles away from the crash, where propane is leaking, Virgil fire officials announced. All Virgil firefighters were called about 10:57 a.m. to report to the station.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area and school districts have been notified so they can prepare student drop-off for the area, police said.
Units remained on the scene "working to flare off/burn off the propane due to the damage to the truck," Brown wrote.
Firefighters from Virgil and Cortland responded, including the Cortland Fire Department's hazardous materials team. Firefighters from McLean, State Fire, the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control, the Cortland County Sheriff's Office and state police have also responded. Virgil Highway, Cortlandville Highway, Mike's Welding and Ron's Towing assisted.
