The McGraw baseball team held up against a late surge from Stockbridge Valley to win 9-6 Monday at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex. The Eagles are now 7-1 and had not played since April 16.
McGraw got four runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out in front. Riley VanLiew hit a two-run double to drive in Calob Sutton and Blair Mulcahy, then VanLiew and Brennan Wilson both scored on errors.
The Eagles’ offense fell a bit flat in the second through fifth innings, scoring just once in both the third and fifth. VanLiew scored on a passed ball in the third and Blair Mulcahy tripled and scored on a VanLiew single in the fifth.
McGraw head coach Corey Wilson thinks some of his guys got down on themselves after a bad at bat and wants to make sure that doesn’t become a trend.
“I think some of our players were a little frustrated with how they were approaching the pitcher and having some swings they don’t usually make,” Corey Wilson said. “We talked about positive energy. Moving forward we need to do a better job of that.”
Owen Mulcahy got the start for McGraw, going three-plus innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts. He exited the game with runners on second and third and no outs, with Corey Wilson going to Owen’s older brother, Blair.
“I wanted to go longer with Owen and my plan wasn’t to go to Blair tonight, but being a league game it was really important,” Corey Wilson said. “I felt most confident with him the way he’s been pitching all year.”
Blair Mulcahy allowed just one of the runners to score, giving up an RBI single before striking out three in a row.
The star sophomore cruised until the sixth, when he allowed a run to make it 6-3.
McGraw appeared to put the game away in the bottom of the sixth. Thomas Lea and Sutton both scored on a throwing error by Stockbridge Valley catcher Braden Renner. Blair Mulcahy scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-3.
Stockbridge Valley them got to Blair Mulcahy, tagging him for three consecutive hits to make it 9-4. Down to his final strike, Scott Rood ripped a two-run triple into the right-center gap to put the tying run in the on-deck circle. Blair Mulcahy punched out Evan Enslow on four pitches to end the threat.
Corey Wilson was willing to let it ride with his ace on the mound in a big game.
“He’s been there so many times he knows how to handle himself,” Corey Wilson said. “I thought he did a good job. They put the ball in play. It’s just baseball.”
Blair Mulcahy ended with a line of four runs on seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in four innings.
VanLiew finished 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored, Blair Mulcahy went 3-for-3 with a triple, a walk and three runs, Sutton walked once and scored twice, Lea singled and scored, Brennan Wilson walked twice and scored once, Jaydon Bassett singled and Owen Mulcahy drew a walk.
McGraw bounced back from its spring break week off and started the back half of its schedule strong. Corey Wilson thinks this team has some serious potential if the offense can continue putting up runs.
“Getting a win is very important, but we haven’t seen the ball in a week,” Corey Wilson said. “Just getting back into a rhythm offensively is the key. If we can do things offensively, we are a team to beat.”
The Eagles’ next game is at 5 p.m. today at Sandy Creek.
