A Cortland man was arrested Monday morning after police established a perimeter following a complaint he had a shotgun, Cortland police said.
Police were called about midnight to 39 Port Watson St. for the report of a man with a gun; the complainant told police someone had followed her boyfriend to their apartment and was seen with a long gun in the building’s common area.
Police said they established a perimeter around the complex and stopped Donald Sampson, 23, as he came down the stairs without a weapon.
Sampson denied he had a weapon, but police took him into custody and a security video showed he had carried a shotgun into the hallway. A drone search of the building showed no other weapons, but police found a loaded 12-gauge shotgun in the hall, later reported stolen.
Sampson was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor.
Details of his arraignment in Cortland City Court and future court appearances were not available.
