A Madison County man has been convicted of molesting a girl under 13 several times between 2012 and 2013 in Homer.

Nicholas R. Carew, now 31, of Canastota, was convicted Thursday following a five-day trial in Cortland County Court of first-degree criminal sexual act and first-degree course of sexual conduct, District Attorney Patrick Perfetti announced Monday.

“The victim in this case originally disclosed the abuse in 2015, alleging that such abuse occurred on several dates between 2012 and 2013,” Perfetti said in a release. “Upon a redisclosure in 2024 and a refreshed examination of the evidence, law enforcement and prosecutors determined that a prosecution was viable.”

Carew and the victim knew each other.

The victim’s father said in May he was aware of Carew’s 2014 abuse charges, but did not know all the details. During a 2015 visit, a relative insisted the girl sleep over, which was unusual for a school night, the father said.

“I received a phone call from child protective services the next day, and they told me they wanted to meet with me in the morning,” the father said, then when he was told the girl had reported that Carew had sexually abused her.

Perfetti said that a team including the Child Advocacy Center, Cortland County Sheriff’s Office and Cortland County Child Protective Services supported the victim and worked together to secure the conviction.

Carew had previously been charged in two other cases, stemming from incidents between 2010 and 2011, and 2011 and 2013.

Judge Julie Campbell will sentence Carew on April 3. Perfetti said he faces a mandatory sentence of five to 25 years for each conviction, plus probation of five to 20 years. He will have to register as a sex offender.
