To the Editor:

Every member of the Cortland County Legislature knew what their position entailed prior to running for office. They were aware of the salary and time commitments. They knew their salary would be $10,000 a year, and would have to attend meetings on the 4th Thursday of every month, as well as one or two other meetings depending on the committees they were on.

Yet, in the last 16 months they have voted to increase their pay by 20% (10-4) and give themselves the month of July off (11-5). This means that the taxpaying citizens of the county are now paying them more, for less work. We deserve a local government that is working in the best interest of the county, and not themselves. Members that are willing to put in the time and effort to do the job the citizens elected them to do — serve the people of Cortland County to the best of their abilities.
