Cortland’s Jaxson Gambitta is the Cortland Standard’s January Athlete of the Month, sponsored by the Royal Auto Group.
Gambitta has been a senior leader for a resurgent Cortland boys basketball team this year, helping the Purple Tigers finish the regular season with a 15-5 record. The Purple Tigers went 5-1 in January, with Gambitta averaging 12.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per night.
Gambitta led the team in rebounding, assists, steals and blocks in January and was second in scoring.
He also helped Cortland pull off one of the biggest comebacks in recent program history, overcoming a 21-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter on Jan. 30 to beat cross-town rival Homer at home.
Cortland head coach Jeremy Milligan commended Gambitta’s consistency on and off the court and his leadership throughout the season.
