The Section III baseball postseason stage is set with Cortland and Homer competing in the Class A tournament, Tully in Class C and McGraw in Class D. All four teams begin postseason play today.
Cortland finished the regular season with a record of 14-5 and earned the No. 5 seed in Class A. The Purple Tigers host their opening round, opponent No. 12 Carthage (8-10), at 5 p.m. today at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex. The winner moves on to play the winner of No. 4 Westhill and No. 13 Chittenango, with the higher seed hosting at 5 p.m. Thursday. Cortland and Carthage have not met this season, but have faced two common opponents in Adirondack and Mexico. The Comets hold two victories over Adirondack by scores of 15-7 and 10-2 and fell to Mexico 11-8. The Purple Tigers defeated Adirondack 13-0 and hold two wins over Mexico, by scores of 7-2 and 8-7.
Homer earned the No. 10 seed with a record of 8-8 and travels to No. 7 Central Valley Academy (8-11) at 5 p.m. today. The two squads met earlier this season on May 1, with the Thunder prevailing over the Trojans with an 8-4 win. The winner of Tuesday’s game moves on to play at No. 2 New Hartford (14-4) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The Class A semifinals take place at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and the final at 6 p.m. Monday. All games are at Onondaga Community College.
Tully earned the No. 6 seed in Class C with a record of 13-4 and hosts No. 11 Frankfort-Schuyler (7-8), which beat No. 22 Otselic Valley/Cincinnatus 4-1 on Monday, at 4:30 p.m. today. The Black Knights and Maroon Knights go into Tuesday’s matchup completely unfamiliar, with neither team facing each other nor a common opponent. Tuesday’s winner takes on the winner of No. 3 Pulaski (12-2) and No. 14 Weedsport (9-8) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, with the higher seed hosting. The Class C semifinals take place Saturday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Donovan Stadium at Murnane Field in Utica, and the final is at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Onondaga Community College.
McGraw earned the No. 5 seed with a record of 11-4 and host No. 12 Copenhagen (5-13) at 5 p.m. today at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex. Both teams have played General Brown and Sandy Creek this season, with the Eagles beating General Brown 8-4 and losing to Sandy Creek 10-7. The Golden Knights fell to both teams, holding an 11-9 loss to the Lions and a 5-3 loss to the Comets. The winner between McGraw and Copenhagen head to No. 4 Poland (8-7) for a game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The Class D semifinals take place at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at Donovan Stadium at Murnane Field in Utica and the final is at noon Monday at Onondaga Community College.
