Homer’s Hunter Lines and Jack Brown and Southern Hills’ Logan Sherriff and David Frazee are all competing at the New York State Boys Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday at MVP Arena in Albany, with none of the four holding any prior experience at the state’s final meet of the year. All four compete in Division II.
Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. Friday and the wrestlebacks run through about 8 p.m. Wrestlers who advance to Saturday will begin wrestling at 10 a.m., with the consolation finals happening at 2 p.m. The state title matches will start at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
Lines has been on a path to the state tournament for a long time, holding a 146-31 record over four varsity seasons. He’s ripped off a 39-2 record in his senior season, including 24 straight wins heading into states. Lines has 25 pins and six tech falls and has won an OHSL title, a Section III Class B title and a Section III Division II title.
Lines earned the No. 5 seed at 138 pounds and will face either No. 12 Neil Murphy (34-6), from Coxsackie-Athens, or No. 21 Braiden Houghtaling (16-7), from Locust Valley. The winner will face No. 4 Zach Rooks (41-3), from Palmyra-Macedon, No. 13 Joseph Filocamo (28-2), from Island Trees, or No. 20 Ryder Antonucci (28-12), from Mattituck.
Brown is a sophomore who came so close to reaching states as a freshman, losing twice to the same wrestler at the 2024 Section III Division II tournament. Brown is 38-5 this season with 26 wins by pin, 13 of those coming in the first period. The sophomore won an OHSL championship before placing second at both the Section III Class B championships and the Section III Division II championships.
Brown is the No. 9 seed at 285 pounds and will wrestle No. 8 Elijah Porpora (31-3), from John Glenn, in the opening round. The winner will take on either No. 1 Troy Beeman (36-3), from Waverly, No. 16 Connor Young (8-2), from Ogdensburg, or No. 17 Nick Oosterom (19-5), from Port Jervis.
Sherriff, like Brown, had a successful freshman season before breaking through to the state tournament in his sophomore season. He was 37-6 last season, but is 33-4 with an OHSL title and a Section III Class C title in the 2024-25 campaign. Sherriff also finished second in the Section III Division II tournament. The sophomore is a hard worker, recording 13 pins and 11 tech falls this year.
Sherriff is the No. 8 seed at 152 pounds and will face No. 9 Abdeen Zaggout (44-6), from Unatego/Unadilla Valley. Sherriff beat Zaggout by a 13-12 decision on Jan. 11 at the Dan Wickham Classic. The winner will take on either No. 1 Luke Nieto (42-3), from Plainedge, No. 16 Gabriel Sanchez (35-13), from Cazenovia, or No. 17 Jacob Conti (40-7), from Shoreham-Wading River.
Frazee was consistently the second-best 215-pounder in Section III, suffering four of his eight losses to Marcellus’ Christopher Doshna. Frazee was second in all three postseason tournaments to Doshna, but still finished the season with a 25-8 record than included 12 wins by pin.
The senior is the No. 7 seed at 215 pounds and will stand across from No. 10 Aidan Lestrange (40-1), from Wayne, in the first round. The winner will wrestle either No. 2 Chris Howatt (32-4), from Pioneer), No. 15 Chad Monty (35-2), from Granville/Whitehall, or No. 18 Max Milton (22-6), from Nanuet.
