The Cortland track and field team is hoping for the success of its indoor season to translate into its spring season, with several standout athletes leading the way.
Jack Phelan and Duncan Harbin had the most notable success during the indoor season, as both won a sectional championship. Phelan won in the triple jump and placed second in the 55-meter dash and long jump. He also set the school record in triple jump (43 feet, 1.5 inches) and the 55-meter dash (6.86 seconds). Harbin won in shot put and placed third in weight throw. He also set the school record in weight throw (52 feet, 7.5 inches) with his final throw of the season.
Cortland boys track & field head coach Luke Schweider is excited to see what the duo can accomplish in the spring.
“We are excited to see what Jack can do in individual events such as the 100-meter, 200-meter, long jump and triple jump, along with team events that he competes in such as the 4x100-meter,” Schweider said. “Jack’s goal is to qualify for the New York state championships. Duncan has been working hard in the offseason with a goal to perform well in outdoor. We are excited to see how his indoor season translates to the outdoor season.”
Bryan Honan also had success on the boys side during the indoor season. He placed second in weight throw and fourth in shot put at sectionals. Spenser Dodds also looks to have a strong season, as he qualified for sectionals in the winter in the 1000-meter run and 1600-meter run, placing third in the 1000-meter run.
The girls side, led by head coach Vince Lizama, will be without Lilly Call, who had loads of success during the indoor season and won a sectional title. Call is a member of the girls lacrosse team in the spring. Campbell Bush was also a top athlete in the winter. Bush had a strong finish to the indoor season, breaking her own school record in the 55-meter hurdles (9.57 seconds).
Bailey Dintino and Rileigh Madden had strong performances during indoor and expect to continue to improve in the spring. Dintino, a freshman, saw success as a short sprinter and looks to compete in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 4x100-meter relay. Madden, a pole vaulter, is hoping to improve in the spring and has put in time in the offseason to help that process.
Schweider is excited to see all the athletes perform at a high level this spring with hopes that they can all make runs towards sectionals and beyond.
“We are excited to have a few returners who found a lot of success last spring and indoor season,” Schweider said. “The boys team seems to be more balanced this year, with a few strong athletes through many events. With only 18 athletes, our team is not large, but we have talented athletes that could make a good run into sectionals, state quals and possibly states.”
