Cortland and Tompkins counties were dropped to a low risk of coronavirus spread, the federal government reported Friday, as the risk in Broome and Tioga counties was dropped to medium.
The risk level dropped to low in Cayuga and Onondaga, where it remained in Madison and Chenango.
Cortland County had 46 new cases of COVID-19 between Nov. 10 and Wednesday, giving it a rate of 96.68 cases per 100,000 people, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.
It had a “low” risk, under CDC guidelines. Under metrics and guidance from the CDC — which take into account the number of new cases in a week, the number of hospitalizations and hospital capacity:
- In counties with a “high risk,” wearing a mask in indoor public places is still recommended.
- In counties with a “medium risk,” people with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask. People at a high risk for severe illness should consult their healthcare provider about the need for a mask or other precautions.
- In counties with a “low risk,” no additional precautions beyond staying up to date with vaccines and getting tested if one has symptoms are recommended.

Cortland reports 4 new COVID cases
Cortland County reported four cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, raising the number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began to 12,830, the state Health Department reports.
Tompkins and Cayuga counties reported 35 new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state reported. The three counties have seen 57,917 cases since the pandemic began in March 2020. The number of people who have died from the virus remains 397.
- One new COVID patients was admitted to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center on Wednesday, but none Thursday, the state Health Department reported Friday. The hospital had three COVID patients. Since the pandemic began, 814 Cortland County residents have been hospitalized for COVID; that number was last updated Nov. 14. The state Health Department reports 306,350 tests have been administered. The state has reported 131 deaths.
- Tompkins County saw 19 new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state Health Department reported. The number of confirmed cases rose to 25,468. The state reports 3,059,624 tests have been administered. Ninety-seven Tompkins residents have died.
- Cayuga County saw 16 new cases Saturday and Sunday, the state Health Department reported. Confirmed cases rose to 19,619. The state reports 395,090 tests have been administered, and 169 people have died.
168,548 receive COVID vaccine
The state Health Department reports 29,857 Cortland County residents have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, or 62.4% of the county’s total population. A total of 58.9% of the county has been fully vaccinated, and 61% of the eligible population has received a booster.
- In Tompkins County, 88,688 people have received at least one dose, or 86.3% of the population; 78.3% are fully vaccinated. and 63.3% of the eligible population has been boosted.
- In Cayuga County, 50,003 residents have received at least one dose, or 64.8% of the population; 60.5% are fully vaccinated and 60.1% of the eligible population has been boosted.
- Across the state, 17 million people have received at least one dose, or 83.7% of the population. A total of 75.6% have received two doses, and 53.4% of the eligible population has been boosted.
