Cortland drops to ‘medium risk’

Cortland County dropped to a “medium risk” for COVID-19 transmission, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday night.

Cortland County reported 82 new cases of coronavirus from May 12 to Wednesday. The CDC said Cortland has 172.34 new cases per 100,000 people over the past week.

Under metrics and guidance from the CDC — which take into account the number of new cases in a week, the number of hospitalizations and hospital capacity — Cortland County was listed as having a “medium risk” of transmission. Tompkins remained a high risk and Chenango rose to a high risk, but Cayuga and Madison counties dropped to a medium risk:

- In counties with a “high risk,” wearing a mask in indoor public places is still recommended.

- In counties with a “medium risk,” people with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask. People at a high risk for severe illness should consult their healthcare provider about the need for a mask or other precautions.

- In counties with a “low risk,” no additional precautions beyond staying up to date with vaccines and getting tested if one has symptoms are recommended.

Cortland County: 21 new cases

Cortland County saw 21 new cases of COVID-19, and one death, the state Health Department reported Thursday, bringing the county to a total of 11,449 cases since the pandemic began.

Cortland, Tompkins and Cayuga counties reported 115 new cases, and one death, the state reported Thursday. The three counties have seen 50,502 cases since the pandemic began in March 2020. The number of people who have died from the virus has risen to 362.

- Two new COVID patients were admitted to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center Tuesday, the state reported Wednesday. The hospital had 10 COVID patients. Since the pandemic began, 674 Cortland County residents have been hospitalized for COVID. The state Health Department reports 284,820 tests have been administered. The state has reported 121 deaths.

- Tompkins County saw 86 new cases, the state Health Department reported Thursday. The number of confirmed cases rose to 21,538. The state reports 3,008,934 tests have been administered. Eighty-six Tompkins residents have died.

- Cayuga County 29 new cases, and one death, the state Health Department reported Thursday. Confirmed cases rose to 17,515. The state reports 361,429 tests have been administered, and 155 people have died.
164,028 receive COVID vaccine

The state Health Department reports 29,478 Cortland County residents have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, or 61.6% of the county’s total population. A total of 58.2% of the county has been fully vaccinated, and 72.7% of the eligible population has received a booster.

In Tompkins County, 85,053 people have received at least one dose, or 82.7% of the population; 75.6% are fully vaccinated. and 75% of the eligible population has been boosted.

In Cayuga County, 49,497 residents have received at least one dose, or 64.2% of the population; 59.9% are fully vaccinated and 72.6% of the eligible population has been boosted.

Across the state, 16.61 million people have received at least one dose, or 90.4% of the population. A total of 77.2% have received two doses.
