6 new cases in Cortland

Cortland County saw six new cases of COVID-19, the state Health Department reported Wednesday, bringing the county to a total of 11,422 cases since the pandemic began.

Cortland, Tompkins and Cayuga counties reported 73 new cases, and one death, the state reported Wednesday. The three counties have seen 50,360 cases since the pandemic began in March 2020. The number of people who have died from the virus has risen to 360.

n Two new COVID patients were admitted to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center Tuesday, the state reported Wednesday. The hospital had 10 COVID patients. Since the pandemic began, 673 Cortland County residents have been hospitalized for COVID. The state Health Department reports 284,546 tests have been administered. The state has reported 120 deaths.

n Tompkins County saw 53 new cases, and one death, the state Health Department reported Wednesday. The number of confirmed cases rose to 21,452. The state reports 3,008,114 tests have been administered. Eighty-six Tompkins residents have died.

n Cayuga County 20 new cases, and one death the state Health Department reported Wednesday. Confirmed cases rose to 17,486. The state reports 360,952 tests have been administered, and 154 people have died.

Cortland County rate now at 214 cases per 100,000

Cortland County reported 102 new cases of coronavirus from May 11 to Tuesday. The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Cortland has 214.37 new cases per 100,000 people over the past week.

Under metrics and guidance from the CDC — which take into account the number of new cases in a week, the number of hospitalizations and hospital capacity — Cortland County was listed as having a “high risk” of transmission. Tompkins and Cayuga counties are also high risk:

n In counties with a “high risk,” wearing a mask in indoor public places is still recommended.

n In counties with a “medium risk,” people with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask. People at a high risk for severe illness should consult their healthcare provider about the need for a mask or other precautions.

n In counties with a “low risk,” no additional precautions beyond staying up to date with vaccines and getting tested if one has symptoms are recommended.

163,959 have received COVID vaccine in 3 counties

The state Health Department reports 29,471 Cortland County residents have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, or 61.6% of the county’s total population. A total of 58.2% of the county has been fully vaccinated, and 72.6% of the eligible population has received a booster.

In Tompkins County, 84,996 people have received at least one dose, or 82.7% of the population; 75.6% are fully vaccinated. and 74.7% of the eligible population has been boosted.

In Cayuga County, 49,492 residents have received at least one dose, or 64.2% of the population; 59.9% are fully vaccinated and 72.3% of the eligible population has been boosted.

Across the state, 16.6 million people have received at least one dose, or 90.4% of the population. A total of 77.2% have received two doses.
