Cortland County reports 7 new COVID cases

Cortland County saw seven new cases of COVID-19, the state Health Department reported Tuesday, bringing the county to a total of 11,422 cases since the pandemic began.

Cortland, Tompkins and Cayuga counties reported 75 new cases, and one death, the state reported Tuesday.

The three counties have seen 50,287 cases since the pandemic began in March 2020.

The number of people who have died from the virus has risen to 359.

- One new COVID patient was admitted to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center Monday, the state reported Tuesday. The hospital had seight COVID patients. Since the pandemic began, 672 Cortland County residents have been hospitalized for COVID. The state Health Department reports 284,249 tests have been administered. The state has reported 120 deaths.

- Tompkins County saw 54 new cases, and one death, the state Health Department reported Tuesday. The number of confirmed cases rose to 21,399. The state reports 3,007,575 tests have been administered. Eighty-six Tompkins residents have died.

- Cayuga County 21 new cases, the state Health Department reported Tuesday. Confirmed cases rose to 17,466. The state reports 360,649 tests have been administered, and 153 people have died.

Cortland County rate at 223 cases per 100,000

Cortland County reported 106 new cases of coronavirus from May 10 to Monday. The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Cortland has 222.78 new cases per 100,000 people over the past week.

Under metrics and guidance from the CDC — which take into account the number of new cases in a week, the number of hospitalizations and hospital capacity — Cortland County was listed as having a “high risk” of transmission. Tompkins and Cayuga counties are also high risk:

- In counties with a “high risk,” wearing a mask in indoor public places is still recommended.

- In counties with a “medium risk,” people with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask. People at a high risk for severe illness should consult their healthcare provider about the need for a mask or other precautions.

- In counties with a “low risk,” no additional precautions beyond staying up to date with vaccines and getting tested if one has symptoms are recommended.

163,920 receive COVID vaccine

The state Health Department reports 29,470 Cortland County residents have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, or 61.6% of the county’s total population. A total of 58.2% of the county has been fully vaccinated, and 72.5% of the eligible population has received a booster.

In Tompkins County, 84,963 people have received at least one dose, or 82.7% of the population; 75.5% are fully vaccinated. and 74.6% of the eligible population has been boosted.

In Cayuga County, 49,487 residents have received at least one dose, or 64.1% of the population; 59.9% are fully vaccinated and 72.3% of the eligible population has been boosted.

Across the state, 16.6 million people have received at least one dose, or 90.4% of the population. A total of 77.2% have received two doses.
