Coffee with a cop – with cowboys

Center for the Arts screens westerns with Homer police chief

While it may be nice sipping coffee with a cop, watching his favorite childhood movie with him may form a deeper connection.

The Center for the Arts of Homer is hosting “Westerns with the Chief,” where you can watch a western movie with Homer Police Chief Robert Pitman.

“Homer’s Chief of Police Robert Pitman came to me with an idea of hosting old western movies at the center, as he is a big fan of old westerns,” said Executive Director Ty Marshal. “We thought it was a cool idea, and a fun way for our community to connect with our local police department.”

The evenings begin at 6 p.m., where people can talk with Pitman about any questions, concerns, or local updates, Marshal said. The films, which are as follows, will start at 7 p.m.

•Feb. 13, “True Grit.”

•March 13 “The Shootist.”

Pitman got attached to the film genre by watching so much of it as a kid, he said.

“It’s just a way to talk with the community, to find out what’s going on out there, and gain their trust, both ways,” Pitman said.

Admission is free, but donations to the center are accepted.

“I like to think of it as a type of ‘coffee with a cop’ but cooler, because there’s cowboys,” Marshal said.
