Cincy girls volleyball rolls past DeRuyter

Posted

The Cincinnatus girls volleyball team put on a clinic through two sets against DeRuyter in a 25-9, 25-2, 25-20 win Wednesday night at Cincinnatus Central School.

The Lions led 13-9 in the first before ripping off 11 straight points, then Cincinnatus put on a serving show in the second. Kaedance Latta and Cassia Schuyler services resulted in a 24-1 lead, but a Schuyler serve went long and Cincinnatus finished off the final point for the dominant set win.

Cincinnatus head coach Becky Merihew hasn’t seen many dominant sets like that before and saw her girls get into a crazy rhythm.

“It takes picking spots, putting it into a certain spot,” Merihew said. “We’ve been struggling with our serves a little bit and it was nice to find a rhythm. When we serve, we can play like that.”

From the run at the end of the first set to the 7-1 start to the third, the Lions went on a 43-3 spurt.

Cincinnatus has tended to fade in the second set this season, but Merihew was happy to see her girls keep the foot on the gas Wednesday.

“I feel like we either play really strong early in the first, then they goof around in the second,” Merihew said. “I think it’s just the consistent serves. When they’re serving, they’re confident and they put everything else together.”

Latta led Cincinnatus with 23 service points, 17 assists, four aces, two kills, two blocks and six digs, Schuyler recorded 13 service points, six aces and nine digs and Allyson St. Germain notched 10 kills, eight service points, two aces and three digs. Payton Gerrard (seven service points, two aces, one dig), Maddie Pittsley (three kills, three service points, one ace, three digs), Lucy Finch (two kills, two digs), Ava Larrabee (two kills), Leah Stith (one kill, one ace, one service point, two digs, one assist) and Hannah Ellerson (one kill, one dig) also contributed for the Lions.

Chelsey Prince topped DeRuyter with a kill, three aces, two digs and an assist, Molly Amidon pitched in six digs and two assists and Graycie Barber went for eight digs. Erin Bragg (four digs, one kill), Annabelle Stanton (two digs, one assist), Angelena Rodriguez (one kill, one dig) and Selena Rodriguez (one kill, one dig) all aided the Rockets’ effort as well.

Cincinnatus is now 10-0 with just three matches left before sectionals begin. The Lions officially wrapped up the CCL title with Wednesday’s win and Merihew is looking for her girls to prepare for the postseason now.

“I want them to take care of themselves,” Merihew said. “They need to stay healthy, eat, drink water and don’t let up.”

Cincinnatus will play again at noon Saturday at Central Valley Academy, while DeRuyter looks to get back in the win column at 7 p.m. Friday at Tully.
