If you have any holiday stress, feel free to channel it into holiday cheer this weekend by embracing one of Christmas’ oldest traditions.
Tonight, the Cortland County Historical Society will walk around the neighborhood and sing classic Christmas songs before going back to the Suggett House Museum for some hot cocoa, cookies and museum tours.
The event falls on National Caroling Day, said Tabitha Scoville, director of the Cortland County Historical Society. There will be lyric booklets for singers to follow along.
“There’s just so many people that haven’t visited the museum, so we try to think of very creative ways to draw people in, even though tours are always free,” said Sophie Clough, collections and research assistant. “It feels really special with all of the holiday decorations up.”
A free sing-alon caroling event will be at 7 p.m. tonight at the Virgil Community Living Center, in partnership with the Center for the Arts of Homer, the Center Wassailers and Cortland Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Choir.
“It’s just a pretty simple, low-key holiday singalong,” said Bryn Carr, who is organizing the event with Access to Arts Cortland. “Just come and sing carols with us. It’s a really nice way to build community spirit and get in the mood for the holidays.”
Anyone who can’t attend in-person, but could use some holiday cheer is welcome to attend via Zoom at meeting ID 956 7928 0896 and pass code 656212
“We became aware last year that there are people that would like to participate in caroling but can’t get out of their homes,” Carr said. “We’re going to do a live Zoom for people to sing along from their homes.”
At the YMCA’s Cocoa and Carols Holiday Event at 2 p.m. Sunday, attendees can enjoy a hot chocolate bar, cookies, holiday karaoke with Mrs. Claus.
If any families decorated a gingerbread house at home, they can be submitted into a gingerbread house contest, also at the event. Email programs@cortlandymca.org for additional information.
